‘Sheer perfection’ — Barcelona batter Sevilla in La Liga to put Real Madrid on alert before El Clasico

Written by on October 21, 2024

“Sheer perfection” was how Barcelona‘s own website described their 5-1 dismantling of Sevilla on Sunday — a result that will have put Real Madrid on alert before next week’s Clasico.

The Catalans moved three points clear of Los Blancos at the top of La Liga after an emphatic victory in which Robert Lewandowski scored twice to take charge of the race for the Golden Boot, comfortably ahead of Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe.

There was also a late double for youngster Pablo Torre after Pedri has found the net in the first half, with Stanis Idumbo netting a consolation for Sevilla, who sit 13th in the table after just three wins from their first 10 league games of 2024/25.

The victory for Hansi Flick’s side was made sweeter by the return from injury of midfield star Gavi, who had spent almost a year on the sidelines with a serious knee injury. “I’ve dreamed about this moment for months,” he said afterwards. “Watching the team from the outside is very hard and you have to enjoy every moment and appreciate things. I feel very lucky to be here today.”

The manner of the victory served as an ominous warning to Barca’s opponents this week: Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, and Real Madrid in La Liga. Catalan daily Sport described the team as a “steamroller”; Mundo Deportivo said they had “started their big week in style”. It’s certainly hard to disagree.
